  • Start Date: The IRS typically begins accepting tax returns for the 2024 tax year in late January 2025. The exact date will be confirmed by the IRS closer to the start of the season.
  • End Date: The deadline for filing 2024 tax returns is April 15, 2025, unless extended. If you are filing an extension, the extended deadline is October 15, 2025.

  • Changes in Tax Brackets: The IRS has adjusted tax brackets for inflation, which may affect your tax liability. Be sure to check the updated brackets for 2024 returns.
  • Enhanced Standard Deduction: The standard deduction for tax year 2024 has been increased slightly due to inflation adjustments.
  • Child Tax Credit: The enhanced Child Tax Credit from previous years is expected to revert back to the pre-2021 levels, unless further legislation is passed to extend or modify it.

  • Income: W-2s, 1099s (for contractors or freelance work), interest income (1099-INT), dividend income (1099-DIV), unemployment benefits, or other income forms.
  • Deductions: Mortgage interest (1098), property taxes, medical expenses, charitable contributions, business expenses (for self-employed individuals), and education-related expenses.
  • Tax Credits: Records for any tax credits, including child tax credits, education credits, and energy-efficient home improvement credits.
  • Personal Information: Social Security numbers (or ITINs) for you, your spouse, and dependents.

  • January 31, 2025: Deadline for employers to provide W-2 forms to employees and 1099 forms to independent contractors.
  • April 15, 2025: Deadline to file your 2024 tax return or request an extension (the extended deadline is October 15, 2025).
  • October 15, 2025: Deadline for filing extended returns.
  • September 15, 2025: Deadline for making the third-quarter estimated tax payment for 2025 (if applicable).

  • Child Tax Credit: The Child Tax Credit may revert to its pre-2021 structure, with a maximum of $2,000 per child under age 17.
  • Standard Deduction: The standard deduction has increased slightly for 2024 due to inflation adjustments. It will be $27,700 for single filers and $55,400 for married couples filing jointly.
  • Energy Efficient Home Credits: You may be eligible for credits related to home energy improvements, such as solar panels, electric vehicle chargers, and energy-efficient windows, doors, or HVAC systems.

All taxpayers can apply for a 6-month extension to file their returns, pushing the filing deadline to October 15, 2025. However, the extension only applies to filing, not paying. If you owe taxes, they must still be paid by April 15, 2025, to avoid interest and penalties.

If you owe taxes and cannot pay in full by the April 15 deadline, the IRS offers options for payment plans or an installment agreement. You should file your return on time and apply for a payment plan to avoid further penalties.

If you realize that you made an error on your filed tax return, you can amend your return using Form 1040-X. The IRS allows taxpayers to correct mistakes within three years from the original filing date.

The IRS generally recommends keeping tax records for at least three years from the date you filed your return or the due date of the return (whichever is later). Some documents, like records of property purchases or investments, should be kept longer.
